The TinyCircuits TinyDuino is an Arduino compatible board in an ultra compact package. Imagine the possibilities of having the full power of an Arduino Uno in a size less than a quarter! The TinyDuino processor board is roughly equivalent to the Arduino Uno board – same processor, same signals brought out to a shield connector. In fact, most Arduino sketches will work as is without any changes.

Includes:

  • Atmega328P processor (same as is used on the Arduino Uno)
  • Reset switch
  • Status LED
  • 8MHz ceramic resonator
  • Optional battery connector for CR1612-CR1632 coin cell batteries
  • External power supported with a 0.1″ power connection holes
  • Supports automatic switching between +5V and VBATT (if +5V is present, it will be used instead of the battery)

Note: To program this board, you need to use the TinyShield USB & ICP

Note: This board does not include a voltage regulator – do not supply more than +5.5V to VBATT or the +5V signal or you will permanently damage the board and ruin your day.

Note: A TinyDuino Processor Board with Battery holder connector is available

The TinyShield USB & ICP add USB support for the TinyDuino via a micro-USB connector and uses the very popular FTDI USB to Serial converter IC (as used on most standard Arduino models). Using this board allows you to download new sketches via the Arduino IDE to your TinyDuino, and also allows you to add USB communication capabilities to your projects. This board supports RX and TX status LEDs so you can visualize the serial traffic to and from your TinyDuino.

This board also uses the DTR line from the FTDI IC to support the auto-reset function when a new sketch is downloaded to the processor – eliminating the need for you to hit the reset button to reprogram your TinyDuino.

A In-Circuit programming (ICP) 6-pin connection is also available on this board (the header is not included by default), which can be used to program the Atmel microcontroller on the TinyDuino using an external programmer. The size and pinout of this connector is the new Atmel standard, and this can be used directly with newer external programmers like the Atmel JTAGICE 3.

The TinyShield 16 Edge LEDs allows some cool and easy LED indications using only five I/O signals. The 16 LEDs are mounted around the outside of the board, and can easily be seen even when the LED board is in the middle of a TinyShield stackup. The LEDs are arranged using Charlieplexing, which is a technique to allow for control of multiple LEDs using fewer I/O signals. Available with Red, Green and Amber LED color options.

The TinyShield Motor x4 allows you to drive four independently controlled DC brushed motors from your TinyDuino! Using four of the super miniature but very powerful 2mm x 2mm TI DRV8837 Motor Driver (H-Bridge) IC, this shield will allow for to 1.8A per channel and operate motors between 1.8 to 11V. The DRV8837 is extremely easy to use and interfaces and uses a simple PWM to control motor speed, direction, coasting and braking. The board includes a bypass capacitors, as well as heatsinking the chips to a large plane on the bottom side of the board to help with heat dissipation. An external power connection is supplied to connect up to your motor power source (like a battery), and all the connections to the motors are with standard 0.1″ spaced holes, that you can solder your motor leads into or use the supplied 0.1″ headers.

The TI DRV8837 has one H-bridge driver consisting of N-channel power MOSFETs to drive a DC motor or one winding of a stepper motor, or other devices like solenoids. An internal charge pump generates needed gate-drive voltages. There are internal shutdown functions for overcurrent protection, short-circuit protection, undervoltage lockout and over temperature. The DRV8837 can supply up to 1.8 A of output current. It operates on a motor power-supply voltage from 1.8 V to 11 V, and a device power-supply voltage of 1.8 V to 7 V. There is also a extremely low power sleep mode with 120nA sleep current per channel.

Note: While the DRV8837 supports 1.8A @ 11V, we highly recommend operating under 500mA @ 5V per channel unless you have some really good heat sinking in place.

This Tinyshield features the high performance and low power Bosch BMA250 3-axis accelerometer. The BMA250 allows measurement of accelerations in three perpendicular axes and thus senses tilt, motion, shock, and vibration in your projects. There is also an integrated temperature sensor built in.

Even though the BMA250 is designed to run at 1.8V – the Accelerometer TinyShield incorporates level shifters and a local power supply to ensure proper and safe operation over the entire TinyDuino operating voltage range up to 5V.

You can also use this shield without the TinyDuino – there are 0.1″ spaced holes for power, ground, and the two I2C signals along the side of the TinyShield to allow you to connect a different system.

Using the miniature Roving Network / Microchip RN42 Bluetooth 2 Module, easily lets you communicate wirelessly with your TinyDuino via a standard serial port from your computer using Bluetooth SPP (Serial Port Profile Mode). Once connected, this works just like you are connected using USB to your TinyDuino, except now without the wire, since the entire Bluetooth stack software is completely contained in the module, there is no programming required.

This TinyShield is great for short range communications (10 – 20 meters) between your PC / Phone and the Bluetooth module and can support high data rates of up to 2.0Mbps over the air.

Includes power supply and level shifters on the board, so you can run your TinyDuino from 3.3V – 5V.

Note: Apple iPhones / iPad users should use the Bluetooth Low Energy Shield instead due to Apple licensing restrictions.
